The Background
Mexico has been in the coffee game since the 1700s and produces a very large amount of coffee. As Mexican coffee is often fairly mild, a lot of it is used in blends and flavored coffee. That is not to say that Mexican coffee cannot be enjoyed on its own! There are a number of highly reputed coffee growing regions in the Southern portion of Mexico. One of these is Oaxaca, which sits on the Southern coast of the country, bordering another well known coffee growing region, Chiapas. Forested, mountainous slopes offer wonderful coffee growing conditions that benefit further from nutrient rich soils and a warm coastal breeze. Oaxaca coffee is quite distinguished, even from relatively nearby growing regions, making it a very worthy stand alone bean!
What makes Mexican Oaxaca Coffee special?
Right up there with beans from Chiapas, Oaxaca coffee is some of the best to come out of Mexico. This coffee sports a delicate, light body and a mellow, easy drinking taste. Despite the mellow nature and mild acidity, Mexican Oaxaca coffee is complex, balancing a number flavor notes to produce a distinguished profile. Notes of chocolate are the most obvious, while hints of toasted grains and a caramel-toned sweetness also contribute. This is the type of coffee that anyone could enjoy, but seasoned drinkers are likely to appreciate the subtle intricacies more. If you've never tried Mexican Oaxaca coffee, it might be time to take the plunge!
